Wtf are the cards saying?
Babe, listen to me carefully when I say this: you can avoid decisions and confrontation and commitment and the things you truly want to do and say all you want; you can wait for the perfect moment, or the right signs, or the ideal capacity to handle it all – but it will not guarantee your safety, it will not protect your peace, and it will not stop life from moving on without you.
You can wait and wait and wait - delay and deny all you want (Two of Swords)- but life will carry on, and one day you could look into the mirror and find a sad, uneasy, older version of yourself that you don’t recognise. And the lack of recognition will have little to do the inevitable lines and shadows etched across your face by the ticking’s of time, and everything to do with years spent denying yourself the pursuit of joy and feeling (Queen of Cups) and connection and freedom (Queen of Pentacles). It will have everything to do with the uncomfortable feeling that in the ride of life you never once dared to take control of the wheel and pick a destination to aim for, or hell, even just a route to take.
The fundamental truth of this existence is everything moves forward (The Chariot). We are born and we all die, and that truth doesn’t care about whether you are scared, or hurt, or angry, or confused, or have been hard done to and just wish things had been different. Life will charge on, regardless of what your situation was or is, and it will ask you, time and time again: are you going to hop on board and try to own this? Are you going to try and make the best of it? Are you going to choose to love and create (Queen of Cups) anyway, because you’re a human and that’s what humans do? Are you going to choose to make plans and show up and try to feel part of something (Queen of Pentacles) regardless? Are you going to try and find lessons and presence in all of it, despite your doubts and fears and uncertainty?
There is no right or wrong way to do any of this – do not let the limitations of a capitalist agenda dictate to you what ownership, joy, belonging, success, love and ambition should look and feel like. In this world, force of will, stature, control and dominion (The Chariot) are lauded as the markers of victory, but where has that got us? As a species we have subjugated our own, dangerously bent the laws of nature to our will, and enabled grotesque levels of consumption and inequality in the name of worshipping false abundance. We can’t deny it anymore (Two of Swords) - this doesn’t feel like victory, does it?
True victory, I think, will emerge from the things that a patriarchal world will often define as weakness, as hindrances to success. Listening, loving and liberating. Tenderness and openness. Compassion. It will come from the slow horses and late bloomers, the small folk as well as the grand ones. It will come from the hearts of people who care, and the hands of those who are consistent about it.
And maybe - just maybe - true victory isn’t about arriving anywhere at all. Maybe it’s about deciding to move forward anyway, even when the way is unclear. Maybe it’s about choosing, again and again, to love despite disappointment, to build despite uncertainty, to trust despite fear. Maybe it’s about refusing to let life pass you by while you wait for the perfect moment. Because, babe, the perfect moment isn’t coming. But this one? This one is here. And it’s yours to take.
