Happy new year, to my little digital coven.
Another year out, a new year in.
Time is an unknowable, unfuckwithable entity, yet the contracts we sign with her are the most ruthless.
As such, this time of year can often stir up an odd hodgepodge of both mournful and hopeful feelings as we contemplate what has been and try to plan or picture what may come to pass.
This month’s letter is a series of prompts from the cards and me to temper this hodgepodge and maybe cut through some of le crap.
My hope for all of us this month, and indeed year, is that we are able to hear our hearts.
Love,
ilayda
Wtf are the cards saying?
What if someone told you that the thing you wanted - the one you thought had died and gone to rot - was actually just hidden; hibernating, incubating, sending roots searching through the undergrowth this whole time?
What if the only way for you to understand what that hidden thing meant to you was to surrender your ownership of it, your control over it?
What if someone told you that there is a difference between giving up and surrender, and the key to that difference lies both in the concept of faith, and in accepting that control is largely an illusion?
What if they told you that this year was all about life, about creation, about letting the strength of your roots, of your instincts, of your faith begin to bear fruit whilst holding softness and surrender in your heart?
And what if you were told that creation takes many different forms? That one person’s moving work of art is another person’s green thumb, which is another’s instinct to cook and share delicious food, which is another’s flair for making any space feel homey, which is another’s willingness to move their own body and appreciate the way it produces sweat or blood or tears?
What if someone told you that there is always, always, always a balance to be struck between having absolute certainty in your own convictions and ideas vs relying on and trusting the input of others?
What if they said there is also a fine line between setting boundaries and putting up walls, and it’s always worth taking a moment to be mindful of that when you feel the impulse to isolate and reject help.
And, what if you were told that gaining the approval and attention of others is not the same as building a community based on collaboration and collectivism?
What if you were reminded that community is not about serving the interests of a few, but about working together with others, with integrity, to build something that everyone can benefit from?
What if someone said that turning your energy and intention to the things you love, has a funny way of making you feel both powerful and vulnerable, but that’s actually okay, and maybe even a good thing?
What if they said the same thing applies to loving others? That you cannot love someone and control every facet of their existence at the same time?
What if someone brought it all full circle, and said to you that people’s lives are a mirror of how they love? That the way you love your nearest and dearest, or a stranger on the street, or the hopes and dreams and fears in your own heart, or the work you do, or the community you run with will be absorbed and repeated back to you?
So now, someone (me) has actually said this all to you, what do you feel? What do you want? Where does your instinct take you? What does the motherfucking heart say?

Dear I
Throw me your questions about love, career, friendships, families, grief, annoying neighbours, and everything in between. Every month I’ll pick a few that move me, and use the cards to respond. Our exchange will be public, but your identity will be kept totally anonymous, like this example.
